60% of Canadian Truck Drivers Suffer from Musculoskeletal Pain

According to a new academic study from researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, 60% of Canadian truck drivers suffer from musculoskeletal pain because of their job. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are common injuries that affect the muscles, tendons, and nerves, and are typically caused by movements such as pushing, pulling, overexertion or improper posture.

The author of the study sites a perfect storm of conditions that result in such a MSD incidence rate in truck drivers. Prolonged sitting, lack of exercise, poor posture, road vibration, increased stress and tension, and low job satisfaction are all contributing to the epidemic.

The good news is that the vast majority of these injuries can be prevented by adjusting the way that people use their bodies and interact with their environment. When Worklete initially rolled out our program to Hub Group Trucking, the initial terminals were able to reduce the number of injuries from sixteen in the same time frame during the previous year to zero.

North America is currently facing a massive truck driver shortage that is expected to triple by 2026 due to an aging workforce, high turnover, wage wars, and increasing freight demand. There has never been a more important time for fleet owners to invest in the safety and well being of their truck drivers if they want to retain them.

Worklete is a technology platform that reduces musculoskeletal injuries for transportation, shipping and logistics companies by over 55% on average, saving companies millions of dollars a year in direct and indirect workers’ compensation costs.
